Types of Fiber Gasket Material

The fiber gasket material fabrication process is similar to papermaking. Strands of fiber are spread out and impregnated with a resin material, it then dries to form sheets that are easily cut to shape. They are available in a broad range of thicknesses, hardness, and colors. Fiber material makes gaskets with high tensile strength, which resist internal pressure well. They have an upper temperature limit of 250 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and excellent resistance to chemicals, particularly oils — this results in them being used in many industrial situations, especially chemical and petroleum product manufacturing. Fiber gaskets and seals are considered “soft,” meaning they are suitable for applications with relatively low clamping forces, such as Class 150 and 300 flanges.

The fiber materials that are most frequently used include:

  • 444 Fiber®
  • 505 Fiber®
  • Branded Vellumoid®
  • Bucote®
  • Cellulose Accopac®
  • Cellulose Fiber Beater Addition
  • Cellulose/Nitrile Rubber Beater Ad
  • Cellulose/Synthetic Rubber Beater Ad
  • Fiber-Kork®
  • Fish paper
  • Hydro-Fused®
  • ImpervapacTM
  • Lexide
  • Nicote®
  • Nomex®
  • Non-Asbestos NBR Aramid Fiber
  • Synthseal®
  • Thermo-Tork®
  • Vegetable Fiber (Detroiter)
  • Velbuna®
  • Velcar B-10®
  • Vellutherm®
  • Victopac®
  • Vulcanized Fiber

Selecting the right sealing material is important, and there are very few applications our knowledgeable team at Automated Gasket Corp. isn’t familiar with. We can assist you in determining which fiber material will perform best in your unique application. Here’s a more in-depth look at some of the most popular fiber gasket materials:

Vegetable Fiber is commonly referred to as “Detroiter.” It is a treated cellulose fiber material impregnated with protein glue and a glycerin binder. It is strong and flexible, resists heavy pressure, is compressible, and works well for a wide range of sealing applications where temperatures can reach 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Vegetable fiber is chemically treated to be resistant to oils, water, alcohol, grease, air, gas, gasoline, and other solvents; thus it is most often used in industrial, chemical, petroleum, petrochemical, and automotive industries.

Vulcanized fiber is a hard, durable, chemically pure cellulose product that contains no resin or bonding agents. It has superior flatness, high mechanical strength, and excellent resistance to heat and cold. It is lightweight, has excellent tear resistance, and can be machined with standard tools. Vulcanized fiber is produced in several grades and colors.

Fish paper is the name for the electrical grade of vulcanized fiber. It is a strong paperboard insulation used primarily for its excellent electrical insulating properties. This fiber material is lightweight, very easy to form and punch, and is machine-able without splintering, ripping, or cracking. It is also non-magnetic and resistant to solvents, oils, grease, corrosion, wear, and abrasion, making it great for gasket applications, washers, and spacers.

There are a variety of non-asbestos cellulose fiber gasket materials that are bound with blended synthetic or nitrile rubber binders through the beater-addition process. Characteristics such as density, swelling, fluid absorbency, and compressibility vary by the style chosen, but in general, cellulose fiber rubber binder gasket materials exhibit good dimensional stability and flexibility and also demonstrate good fluid resistance, mostly against cold and warm oils, fuels, water, and antifreeze. Cellulose fiber rubber binder gaskets materials have a maximum service temperature range of 350 degrees Fahrenheit. The main industries for these materials are automotive, small engine, and industrial.

Automated Gasket’s custom fiber seals are used in a wide range of applications for industries across the nation. We know that no two applications are the same, that’s why we work directly with you to understand your needs. Our made-to-order gasket process is simple. Send us your CAD file, detailed drawing, or gasket photo, and we will manufacture your custom gasket to fit your specifications.

Our in-house tooling, prototyping capabilities, and raw material buying power allow for efficient custom fiber gasket and seal fabrication that yields the best results for your project. Our team can typically produce your sample within 48 hours of your request, as long as materials are available.
