Silicone Gasket Material Advantages

Silicone is a rubber material that is very versatile and used for a wide range of applications in industries such as aerospace/aviation, agricultural, automotive, electrical, energy, food processing, industrial, medical, small engine, and more!

Silicone is one of the most commonly used gasket materials in outdoor environments because it is highly durable. It is resistant to the effects of extreme temperature, oxygen, aging, UV light, and ozone. It also repels water, resists moisture, and still maintains a watertight seal.

Pharmaceutical and FDA-approved silicone gaskets are odorless, tasteless, and fungus-resistant and can handle extreme cold and heat.

Silicone gaskets are often used to seal variable gaps, but silicone rubber comes in numerous durometers (hardness levels), so it can be used for many applications. Silicone can maintain a proper seal for many years because it has very good compression set resistance, meaning it has the ability to return to its original thickness after a compression load is released.

Silicone rubber maintains excellent flexibility even in applications with exceptionally high and low temperatures — most have temperature ranges between -80 degrees F to 450 degrees F. Compared with organic rubber, silicone rubber offers the advantages of lower molding pressures, low toxicity, and low odor.

Silicone also provides excellent electrical insulation. When combined with nickel-graphite or silver-plated aluminum, silicone gaskets can block electromagnetic interference (EMI) because of their conductive capabilities.

Silicone gasket material is not preferred for applications with oils. We also do not recommend it for dynamic applications because of its poor tear and tensile strengths; however, silicone gaskets do well in most static applications and seal at lower bolt loads than most rubber materials due to their low durometer, which typically spans from 30 to 80.

Silicone Rubber Gasket Grades

Choosing the right material, silicone grade, and gasket thickness is vital. Silicone is available in soft, medium, firm, and extra-firm grades and open-cell, closed-cell, and combined open- and closed-cell variations. The cellular structure of some forms can provide more cushioning and padding properties than others if needed. Silicone with a low durometer is suitable for seals with low-pressure requirements, while high-durometer silicone is more suitable for seals with high-compression requirements.

The types of silicone most commonly used in gasket and seal fabrication include:

  • Commercial Grade Silicone
  • Spec Grade Silicone
  • FDA (Food Grade) Silicone
  • Silicone Sponge
  • Silicone Foam
  • Fluorosilicone
  • Conductive Silicone
  • Fiberglass Reinforced Silicone
  • Coated Fabrics Silicone Sheet
  • Medical Grade Silicone
  • Extreme High Tear Silicone
  • Extreme High-Temperature Silicone
  • Fabric Finish Silicone
  • Flame Retardant Silicone

The knowledgeable team at Automated Gasket Corp. can assist you in determining which will perform best in your unique application. Factors we take into account when suggesting the right silicone gasket materials include:

  • The overall temperature present in your application
  • Exposure to the elements
  • Fluid immersion
  • Coefficient of compressibility
  • The maximum stress the application should stand
  • Chemical compatibility
