When to Use a Semi-Metallic Gasket

The factors that determine which gasket you choose include operating conditions, fluid compatibility, mechanical features of the joint, and the characteristics of the gasket.

To figure out which gasket to select, multiply the operating pressure (in pounds per square inch) by the operating temperature (in Fahrenheit). If the result is greater than 250,000, you should use a semi-metallic gasket.

We offer semi-metallic gaskets in metal-reinforced fiber, metal-reinforced flexible graphite, and solid core.

Features of Semi-Metallic Gaskets

Semi-metallic gaskets are made from a combination of metallic and non-metallic components. The metallic component gives the gasket strength and elasticity, while the non-metallic component provides formability and superior sealing qualities. Some features specific to semi-metallic gaskets that make them so popular for applications include:

  • Can be used against virtually any corrosive medium depending on the choice of the metal and filler/facing material
  • Can be used for temperatures ranging from cryogenic to approximately 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Can be used in extreme pressures and high-vacuum applications
  • Can compensate somewhat for possible flange movement due to temperature gradients, variations of pressure, and vibration

Semi-Metallic Gasket Applications

Because these gaskets are exceptionally versatile, they are available in a variety of styles and sizes. Our gaskets perform in a wide range of high-temperature and high-pressure applications, some of which include:

  • Raised face flanges
  • Male-and-female flanges
  • Tongue-and-groove flanges
  • Pipe flanges
  • Gas mains
  • Pressure vessels
  • Reactors
  • Valve bonnets
  • Housings
  • Heat exchangers

Variations of Semi-Metallic Gaskets

Spiral-Wound Gaskets

These consist of thin metal windings wound together with a soft filler material (such as graphite) placed between the windings. This depends on the mechanical characteristics of a formed metal spiral strip, rather than the compressive virtues of more traditional gasket materials, which makes it ideal for low or fluctuating bolt loads.

Jacketed Gaskets

These consist of a soft, compressible filler, partially or completely encased in a metal jacket. The filler material provides resilience, while the jacket protects the filler and resists pressures, temperatures, and corrosion. They require smooth flange surface finishes, high bolt loads, and flange flatness in order to seal effectively.

Kammprofile Gaskets

Also known as “camprofile,” these are made from grooved metal with covering layers and consist of a solid metal ring with grooved faces and soft facing material. They can be used without sealing layers to provide an excellent seal but the sealing layers help protect the flange surfaces from damage.

Corrugated Gaskets

These are made from thin metal, corrugated (or embossed) with a concentric ring pattern, and faced with a softer material (such as graphite). They can be used on uneven or distorted sealing surfaces.
