Gasket Bonding

Gaskets are substrates that act as a seal between two surfaces. These seals play an important role in various industries. Their assembly requires resistance to a number of fluids, high adhesion to difficult-to-bond surfaces, and fast and easy application. Since companies rely on the seals and gaskets within their machinery and products to create an airtight seal and protect against leaks, reduce vibration, etc., bonded seals can be used to provide superior performance. Bonded seals are a modification of the standard washer design. Bonding through vulcanization creates an endless seal, making the gasket more impermeable to the elements.

Automated Gasket Corporation prides itself on being a full-service gasket manufacturer. Our capabilities in material conversion and gasket fabrication include seal bonding, which allows our experienced team to manufacture your unique product with a quick turnaround. All you need to do is provide us with your CAD file, or our CAD expert can draw it up for you if you have a design.

What are Bonded Seals?

The bonded seal was originally developed to obtain both pressure resistance and vibration resistance in high pressure and temperature conditions. Bonded seals consist of a metallic insert with a vulcanized rubber compound profile which is bonded to the internal diameter.

What is Vulcanization of Rubber?

A vulcanized seal is a type of gasket that’s made of vulcanized rubber. Rubber is vulcanized using a combination of heat, pressure, and adhesives. A typical vulcanized seal consists of two ends that are bound together using those elements to create a sealed surface between the joined passages and ensure a superior level of protection against leaks.

  1. The uncured rubber is applied to the length of the profile.
  2. The ends are pressed together and the joint is placed into a hot mold.
  3. The uncured compound flows into any gaps and fills them, resulting in a strong bond between profile surfaces.
  4. When bonding is complete, cooling is required.

Advantages of Vulcanizing

Vulcanized seals are exceptionally strong, durable, and highly effective at protecting against leaks. Vulcanized seals are resistant to oxidation, so you don’t have to worry about them rusting, corroding, or otherwise sustaining damage from oxidation. If exposed to a solvent, a traditional seal may degrade to the point where it causes oil or liquids to leak; however, vulcanized seals are resistant to solvents.
